"The Indians went that way!!"

Blood River from the Voortrekker Zulu Conflict, and Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift from the Anglo Zulu War, are undoubtedly the three most popular battlefield sites and all three can be visited in one day from Newcastle or Dundee.

The stories and history that go with them also make up an interesting part of the history of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, as the history more or less flows through from the one set of conflicts to the other.

The tour takes from 08h30 from Dundee to returning 17h00 in Dundee, which means that persons wishing to take this tour need to night stop in Dundee the night before and the night after the tour. A picnic lunch will be required on the day of the tour which all the hotels know to provide on request. Cool drinks can be purchased at the orientation centres on Route.A light lunch can also be arranged at Rorke's Drift Hotel, but several days notice in advance is required. Entry fees are currently R30 per person per site. The round trip from Dundee is roughly 180km of which roughly 100km is on gravel roads. They can be travelled by standard cars, but if you wish the guide to provide transport this can be arranged at an extra cost.

A very popular choice is to travel to Dundee on the morning of the first day. It is about 4 hours travel from JHB or DBN and you will arrive around midday and you can drive through to the Talana Museum. As you enter the grounds on your right, beyond the manin museum building you will see the Miner’s Rest Restaurant where you can get an excellent light lunch at a very reasonable price. After lunch visit this excellent multi faceted museum the entry fee is currently R30 per person.

Spend the night in Dundee and my suggestions are Clivia Place or if you like nostalgia and memorabilia, the Royal Country Inn which is a typical English Country Inn, or Ingudlane Lodge if you like modern in a game farm and finally Rorke's Drift Hotel on the banks of the Buffalo River.. The Guide will meet you at your hotel at 08h30 and accompany you to the Battlefields of Blood River, Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. As mentioned the trip takes all day, only getting back to Dundee around 17h00 and you will need a picnic lunch .
